Controversial Bill 23 passes, could severely cost municipalities

Despite widespread opposition from municipalities, conservation authorities and affordable housing advocates, the Ontario government passed the controversial More Homes Built Faster Act on Monday.  Bill 23 restricts the planning authority of local governments, including limiting how much they can collect in development charges, a move the Association of Municipalities of Ontario says could leave them short $5 billion, a shortfall taxpayers would largely need to make up....

Bill 23 Does Not Consider Impacts On Rental Housing: Bruce Grey Poverty Task Force Coordinator

Bruce Grey Poverty Task Force Coordinator Jill Umbach says the provincial government’s approach to Bill 23 is not taking into consideration the impacts on rental housing.... Umbach says; "the government’s strategy to build more houses isn’t taking into consideration a wide range factors. Everything from building into the greenbelt, and lack of protection from wetlands, versus the impacts some of the measures will have on rental housing.... one of the things that would happen under the bill, is give more power to cancel rental housing protection...."
